Here is some inspiration, from one of my favorite artists on DeviantArt, Robbi Rodriguez. He’s got a great distinctive, grungy and cartoony style. I love how his images feel so complete even without the use of much color. His work sometimes veers towards the retro/tiki genre, but it’s way better quality than most old clip art. The way he inserts hard angles into the human form is also something to pay attention to, and it’s something I’m trying to incorporate into my work. He’s certainly a master of pen and ink, so check him out:
