Just wanted to drop a quick note to announce that there?s a new and better Comic Artboard available. Professional artist Brian Denham (of Iron Man Hypervelocity), who runs a great blog full of tricks and tutorials for drawing comic lineart with Illustrator, has put together a new must-have resource.

His board has sizing guides for all the common formats, suggestions on how to organize layers, and a smart color-coded system for managing a comprehensive library of comic brushes. And get this?he even included some of my brushes!

Brian?s very generous to share, so give him some clicks and check it out for yourself!

This is the template I use when I’m starting a new drawing. It has the following features:

  • Standard 10×16″ drawing space
  • 1/2″ Gutter outside the drawing space, 1/2″ text-safe margin inside
  • No unnecessary swatches, patterns, and symbols. Just Global Black, Global White, and a basic blue
  • Preloaded with JW Inker Brushes
  • Layer setup: One Guides layer, and a masked set of Art and Reference layers
  • Compatible with Illustrator CS and later

To use, in Illustrator select File > New from template, and browse to my .ait file. Enjoy!

Inker Brushes

One of the secrets to my recent images is that I’ve been using a set of Illustrator brushes that I created to make strokes that look a lot like real comic book inks. I’ve been refining them for a few months now, and I think they’re ready to share. These brushes are compatible with Illustrator CS and above.
